Christianity Explored Logo

"We all ask the big questions: who am I, what is my purpose in life, where does life come from? Christianity Explored is a great place to find out what the Christian faith has to say on these issues."

- Jonathan Edwards, Olympic Triple-Jumper -

Developed over 10 years, Christianity Explored is an informal course for people who would like to investigate Christianity, or just brush up on the basics. It is simply designed for anyone who wants to investigate Christianity informally with a group of other people. It does not matter whether you have previous experience of Church, Christians and the Bible, or none at all. Everyone is welcome - from the most sympathetic Sunday scholar to the convinced atheist. We will respect your background, culture and beliefs. Tell us as little or as much about yourself as you feel comfortable.

About the Course
The basis of the course is the Gospel of Mark. This was Mark’s account of Jesus’ birth, teaching, death, resurrection and life. To help each course member, they are given a copy of Mark’s Gospel. Each session is based upon a section of it, although course members will not be asked to read any of it out aloud within the groups. Course members are also given a study guide to help them through the Christianity Explored Course. Through studying the entire Gospel of Mark, Christianity Explored investigates who Jesus was, what his aims were, and what it means to follow him.

Not only will participants will not be asked to read aloud during the course they will not be asked to pray or sing. As it is not necessary for people to have any prior knowledge of the Bible, any serious question may be asked and we will seek to answer it. However, if course members wish to sit quietly and listen to everything which is being said that is fine. At the end of the day, Christianity Explored is simply an opportunity for people to have their questions answered.

The Sessions
All the sessions begin with a mean (lunch or dinner depending on whether you are on an afternoon or evening course). This does help those who may have to come straight from work.

Those participating are split into small groups so that they can feel free to ask questions. During the session a talk is given, or a video is shown, explaining the passage from Mark’s Gospel. After that there is a time of discussion in groups based upon what has been said.

Overview of sessions:
Week 1 - Introduction
Week 2 - Jesus—who was He?
Week 3 - Jesus—why did He come?
Week 4 - Jesus—His Death
Week 5 - What is Grace?
Week 6 - Jesus—His resurrection
Week 7 - What is a Christian?
Week 8 - Continuing as a Christian?
Week 9 - Choices—King Herod
Week 10 - Choices—James, John & Bartimaeus
